As scene & heard at the recent benefit for Dave Hewitt held at The Sneddon Theatre in May.
3rd Ear Music would like to thank all those who participated & contributed to these 2 tribute & benefit concerts for Dave Hewitt at the Sneddon Theatre on the 4th & 5th May. The 6th "Guitars for Africa" was once again a resounding success and the music was magnificent. Without a mention in the local music media, the Sneddon Theatre was full on Friday with a 3/4 house on Thursday.
Dave Hewitt, for those of you who may not have heard, can no longer play Guitar due to an advanced state of Alzheimer's. Everybody, who participated in Guitars for Africa, did so entirely for free - The Centre for Creative Arts UND, 3rd Ear Music & the Sneddon hosted the event, with contributions from Musikland, Gearhouse, Artworks & many others. All the money collected at the door and from the CD sales will go to Wendy Hewitt for David's future care and medical expenses.
18 of Dave's guitar friends included ex-pupils & those with whom he has performed, from maskandi & jazz to classical & rock. They gathered for 2 nights to pay tribute to a man who has contributed so much to local music and musicians. His music partner for 20 years, Tessa Ziegler, came down from Johannesburg, especially for the concerts. People from as far away as Los Angeles (Hilton Rosenthal) & Hong Kong (Stan James), promoters and ex-pupils now performing abroad, have all offered their support & contributions. Syd Kitchen who was performing away in Johannesburg also offered a contribution. D'Gary from Madagascar stayed on an extra night to play for Dave. The response has been overwhelming. Thank you all - especially to the Guitar players.
