A quote from The Hidden Years Story - Volume 2 (Penguin Books):
... The thing about 3rd Ear Music (and other independent indigenous music producers) that South Africa should remember, is that pre 1994 the record industry tried to shut you down, the government wanted to shut you up and the media shut you out!
By and large many (if not most) musicians didn't want to know, and the academics didn't care.

On August the 9th 2009, 3rd Ear Music will officially be 40 years young.... And to those who've heaped such praise on this life-long collective labour of love, please remember to remind us, never to forget; what 3rd Ear Music did (and still does) is to press stop, pause, play and record... if it murmurs or moves we tape and shoot it... or gets somebody else to do it. The truth is that the audiences and the musicians out there did all the work and most of the play! We listened.
As someone recently pointed out, this hidden history music material - the photos, posters, programs, the notes, words and music that South Africans made possible, is a collective soundtrack to the loud 'n proud Silent Revolution that so many good (and very young) revolting SAfricans took part in at that time.
